Keepers of the Game

I live off-rez (different state entirely, actually), so I have wifi now! Wifi paired with Netflix is a whole new world for me. I searched for "Keepers of the Game" after I completed the OA (very good show- I highly recommend) and found it.

It's a short documentary that was filmed in Akwesasne- a territory of the Mohawk Nation in New York- where it wasn't culturally acceptable for girls/ women to play lacrosse. The film follows a group of high school girls who start a varsity lacrosse team off-territory at their public high school. It begins when the program is recognized at a school board meeting (although there isn't money to fund it), the moms fundraising and coming up with the money just in time before the season starts, and follows through the season. Each girl faces personal battles as well as cultural and religious battles.

I won't say much else about the plot because I'd probably give something away, but the young ladies are amazing examples for any woman who wants to play lacrosse. The women's game isn't nearly as big as the men's but when foundations are that strong, there is great hope in growing.

"Keepers of the Game" was featured at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival and has been reviewed by the New York Times and ESPN.
